Leather, silk and gold, made slowly

How to read a hide

Journal

What the grain, the edge and the smell of a piece of leather tell you before you buy.

Start with the edge

The edge of a piece is where leather tells the truth. A clean, burnished edge has been sanded, dyed and polished by hand; a rough or painted-over one has not.

Then the grain

Full-grain leather keeps the natural surface of the hide, scars and all. That surface is what develops a patina, which is why it is worth looking for.
