Chalk, shears and patience

Every piece starts on the cutting table: the cloth laid out, the pattern chalked, the shears run once along the line.

We half-canvas our jackets so the chest shapes to you over time, leave trousers unhemmed so they can be finished to your length, and press everything by hand before it leaves.

Finding your fit

Four checks that take the guesswork out of ordering tailoring.

  1. 01

    Measure a jacket you love

Lay it flat: armpit to armpit across the chest, collar seam to hem down the back. Compare with the measurements on each piece.

  2. 02

    Check the shoulder

The seam should end where your shoulder does. It is the one part that cannot be changed, so size from here.

  3. 03

    Choose the length

A jacket should cover your seat; trousers arrive unhemmed so they can be finished to your shoe.

  4. 04

    Alter after purchase

Sleeves, waist and hems are simple work for a good tailor. Ask us which alterations suit each piece.

  • The shoulder sits exactly where mine ends, and the lapel rolls rather than lies flat. It looks like it was made for me.

  • High-waisted, single-pleated and properly pressed. The wool drapes like nothing else I own.

  • Finally, tailoring cut for a woman — shaped at the waist without being tight. I asked about sizing first and ordered once.
