The workshop

Made at the bench

Leather goods cut, stitched and finished by hand, in small numbers.

Slow on purpose

Slow on purpose

A bag here starts as a whole hide on the cutting table and leaves as a finished piece from the same pair of hands. Nothing is glued where it can be stitched, and nothing is painted where it can be burnished.

We make fewer bags so that each one can take the time it needs: a day for a woven tote, most of a week for a structured top-handle.

What we hold to

Our Materials

Leather and canvas, thread and brass.

Hand stitching

The saddle stitch is slower than a machine and far stronger; one broken thread does not undo the seam.

Repair over replace

Straps, edges and linings can be renewed, so a bag can keep going.

From hide to handle

The four benches every piece passes through.

  1. 01

    Selecting

Hides are chosen by hand for grain, weight and colour.

  2. 02

    Cutting

Panels are cut with a knife along paper patterns.

  3. 03

    Stitching

Seams are saddle-stitched with two needles and waxed thread.

  4. 04

    Finishing

Edges are painted, brass is set and the leather is conditioned.

The leather we use

Our hides are vegetable-tanned and full-grain: the strongest outer layer, left uncorrected so the natural marks stay. Vegetable tanning takes weeks rather than hours and gives leather that darkens and softens with use instead of cracking.

The bench

Four things, one bag

Hide, thread, pattern and the tools that join them — everything a bag is made from sits on one bench.
