Five habits that keep a leather bag supple and handsome for decades.
Let it breathe
Store your bag in its cotton dust bag, never in plastic. Stuff it lightly with tissue so it keeps its shape, and keep it out of direct sun.
Wipe, then feed
A dry, soft cloth after use removes dust before it settles into the grain. Twice a year, work a small amount of leather balm in with your fingers, leave it overnight and buff it off.
Water and marks
If the leather gets wet, blot it and let it dry slowly at room temperature — never near a heater. Light scuffs on waxed leather rub back in with the warmth of your thumb.
Edges and brass
Painted edges can be touched up rather than replaced. Solid brass will darken with time; polish it or let it age, as you prefer.
Rest it
Leather likes a day off. Rotating between two bags keeps both in better shape.
